What is Speech Therapy?
Speech therapy is an intervention service designed to enhance a child’s speech and language abilities, including both verbal and nonverbal communication. It focuses on improving speech clarity, understanding (receptive language), and expressing thoughts and ideas effectively (expressive language). These services are provided by speech-language pathologists (SLPs), specialists trained in assessing and treating communication disorders.
Speech therapy encompasses five key components:
1. Morphology (word structure) – Understanding how words are formed and structured.
2. Phonology (speech sounds) – Developing and organizing the sound system of a language.
3. Semantics (vocabulary and meaning) – Expanding and refining word meanings and associations.
4. Syntax (grammar and sentence structure) – Learning how words combine to form meaningful sentences.
5. Pragmatics (social language skills) – Using language appropriately in different social contexts.

What do Speech-Language Pathologists do?
A speech-language pathologist (SLP) is a highly trained professional specializing in the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, and feeding/swallowing difficulties in both children and adults.
Although the terms speech and language are often used interchangeably, they refer to different aspects of communication:
